Expanding the IDLH Lesson

I-D-L-H or “Immediate dangers to life and health” is an acronym that was coined to help first responders frame the scene of a call and apply PPE. In the classroom is where this lesson is often first taught. However, new-ish technology such as particulate blocking hoods frame another angle to expand the understanding of our PPE itself and the dangers it poses.

A new phrase L-D-L-H “Latent Dangers to Life and Health” (or something similar) should be coined to help the firefighter gain exposure to and comprehend the risks posed by prolonged use of the gear itself, regardless of laundering. The gear traps carcinogens and over time gear breaks down and starts to leech chemicals into the skin which may cause cancer. Areas such as the armpits, groin, and throat (thyroid) regions are most vulnerable to these latent dangers.
